How to Store Bikes and Gear Without Losing the Car Spot

Not every full garage is a clutter problem. Sometimes it's a floor-plan problem — you own exactly what you use, there's just nowhere for it to go except the ground, and the ground is where the car is supposed to be.

If that's your garage, you don't need less stuff. You need the stuff off the floor.

The floor is the most expensive real estate in the garage

Everything sitting on the ground — bikes leaned in a row, a golf bag, bins stacked in front of the workbench — is taking up the one thing a garage can't make more of. Move it up the wall or onto the ceiling and the floor comes back, usually without getting rid of a single thing.

Bikes

The single most common floor-space complaint we hear, and the easiest one to fix.

A wall-mounted bike rack takes a bike from a 6-foot floor footprint to about 8 inches of wall. Two bikes leaned against each other block a walking path; two bikes on wall mounts block nothing. Vertical mounts (front wheel up) hold more bikes per foot of wall than horizontal ones — worth knowing if you're storing three or four.

Priced per mounted item, installed. If you've got a fleet of bikes (more than two per household member isn't unusual once you count kids' bikes), do the math on wall length before committing to a style — vertical mounts fit more.

Sports and hobby gear

Golf bags, hockey equipment, skis, camping gear — the stuff that only comes out seasonally but sits on the floor year-round because there's no other spot for it.

Wall hooks and mounts work for anything with a natural hanging point. For gear that doesn't hang cleanly — helmets, pads, loose equipment — an open shelf at reach height beats a bin, because you can see what's there and grab it on the way out the door.

The shelf that actually gets used

Christine's ask was specific and it's a good example: a shelf for helmets and riding gear, somewhere she'd actually use it rather than a bin she'd have to dig through. That's the test for any gear storage — if using it correctly is more effort than just leaving the thing on the floor, it won't get used, and you'll be back to a floor problem in a month.

Put frequently-grabbed gear at reach height, in the open, not behind a door. Save closed storage for things you don't need fast.

What this actually costs

Materials — bins, shelving, wall mounts — are priced at cost plus 20%. A typical bike-and-gear wall for a two-car garage runs a few hundred dollars in product, plus install. Bigger builds — full cabinet walls, slat-wall systems — are a separate quote, priced per job.

You don't have to solve it all in one visit either. Wall mounts for the bikes now, a shelf for the seasonal gear later, is a completely reasonable way to do this in stages.

You don't have to sort everything to fix this

If your problem is genuinely just "no good spot for what I own," you don't need the full decision-heavy sort that a cluttered garage needs. A walkaround tells us in 20 minutes whether you're a storage problem or a sorting problem — they're not the same job, and we'll tell you honestly which one you actually have.
